What’s happening in the world of animation and motion graphics this week? A lot, as it turns out.

Animated feature Loving Vincent gets release date

The long-anticipated Loving Vincent, billed as the first feature-length animated film made entirely from hand-painted canvases, will make its debut on 22 September in New York City.

Good Deed Entertainment also announced that screenings will take place between 2-20 August at the Melbourne International Film Festival and between 17 August - 3 September at the Brisbane International Film Festival.

Loving Vincent uses 65,000 oil painted frames to recall the life, work, and death of legendary Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh.

 

Disney and Pixar reveal details about next releases at D23 Expo 2017

At last week’s D23 Expo 2017, Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios unveiled new details about upcoming projects and future voice talent.

The next batch of animated features include Coco, Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, Incredibles 2, Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2, Toy Story 4, Frozen 2 (Title TBA), an untitled Disneytoon Studios film, and an untitled Dan Scanlon movie.

“I’m so excited about our upcoming movies; they are all hilarious, emotional, beautiful and make you think,” said John Lasseter, Chief Creative Officer of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios.

 

Autodesk gets rid of game engine middleware line

Autodesk has announced that its line of game engine middleware products will be discontinued. Users are being offered access to source code and limited support for Scaleform, Beast, HumanIK, and Navigation until maintenance contracts end.

A company spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz: “Much of our games middleware product functionality has been integrated into the game engines themselves.”

Autodesk’s 3D game engine and real-time rendering software Stingray, which offers similar middleware capabilities, will now serve as the company’s flagship product for game development.

 

Wacom to launch new 24- and 32-inch pen-enabled 4K tablets

Wacom has announced it will be adding two new Cintiq Pro tablets to its pen-enabled lineup in early 2018. The Cintiq Pro 24 will have a 24-inch display/drawing area, while the Cintiq Pro 32 will have a 32-inch display.

Both models will feature 4K resolution, edge-to-edge glass, and Pro Pen 2 support. The 24-inch model is set to cost USD$1,999, with the 32-inch version coming in at USD$3,299.

In terms of size and specification, these new Cintiq Pro tablets represent a significant upgrade on the current 13-inch Full HD and 15.6-inch Ultra HD models.
