Looking after number one isn’t always easy… When you’ve finished work, taken care of the family, completed your daily chores, and socialised with friends, there isn’t much time left for yourself.

Fernwood’s full-service health clubs want to change this. Jumbla was tasked with telling would-be members about Fernwood’s offerings via the medium of 2D animation.

Everyday life is exhausting

This vibrant and vivid animation follows three main characters, who lead separate lives but share the same struggles.

“We opted for a less conventional colour palette to indirectly show different ethnicities,” said Jumbla Motion Designer Glen Miralles. “The character designs also span various age ranges and body shapes to show everyone is welcome.”

Initially, the brief was for Fernwood’s loyalty rewards program. But after impressing with two concepts, Jumbla was asked to create a wider promotion of the brand, which kept many of the original brief’s elements but with a revised core message.

“There was a greater focus on the gym in the final video, and we took a bit more of an emotional approach to the script,” said Jumbla Creative Director Callan Woolcock.

“We positioned Fernwood as a place where you can escape everyday life to focus on and improve yourself.”

2D animation with added depth and dynamism

The animation feels like one continuous scene, where clever camera movements and seamless transitions not only follow each character’s journey, but offer insights into the benefits of Fernwood.

This was pieced together in After Effects and made use of additional animation techniques to offer the viewer a truly immersive experience.

“We went for a 2D look with a mix of 3D to give it a bit of depth and make it more dynamic,” Cal said. “Some of the character animation and subtle detail like the head turns were also created using frame-by-frame animation.

“It was a smooth process and we ended up with a really nice video.”
