Not all explainer videos need to be driven by voice-over. In fact, some - like this 2D animation we made for Flatmates.com.au - don’t even have any dialogue.
Thanks to smart visual storytelling, the absence of dialogue doesn't mean key information has to take a backseat or that entertainment value has to be tarnished.
Jumbla's Lead 2D Animation Artist Kane Rowlingson took charge of this project and contributed some of the key quirks of the video, such as the friendly, hand-waving sun (one who eventually swaps spots with a fiddle-playing crescent moon!).
“We wanted the video to have a bright, sunny feel - pardon the pun - because finding a new housemate should be an exciting time. It can mark the start of a new chapter in people’s lives,” he said.
The background was kept neutral because the Flatmates team wanted the option of running the animation seamlessly on its web page, blending into the same backdrop colour.
The 'nightime' sequence at the end is designed to loop continuously, while the flatmate (or future flatmate!) peruses the popular website.
