What's it Like to Work at Jumbla?

Jumbla is a place of opportunity, growth, creation and fun. Here are just some of the reasons we’re proud to call ourselves “Jumblers”.

The People

We’re a lively bunch of creators who are passionate about what we do, but don’t take ourselves too seriously. We’re a diverse mix of unique personalities, socially united by our common interest in design. We like to hang out around the big communal table for lunches, crack open the beer and cider on Friday afternoons and do an organised night out once a month.

When a brief comes in, we band together to provide the best result possible. Our team comprises of around 20 people in creative roles and only about 8 people in other roles (such as producers) - unlike many studios today, which seem to have a reverse configuration.

Our animators aren’t pigeonholed into using only one skill or technique. While we do capitalise on individual strengths where it may truly enrich a project, we also take every opportunity possible to ensure each creative is a strong generalist animator and designer. We believe in diversifying everyone’s skills to strengthen our overall pool of talent, keeping things interesting and enjoyable for all.

The Work

Our animators and motion designers have the opportunity to work on top-tier projects from some of the biggest brands around. Just a few examples include Toyota, Microsoft, MTV and Telstra. We also collaborate with world-renowned creative agencies, such as Ogilvy, McCann and Leo Burnett. Many of our works have also been commissioned by the Federal Government and the various state governments.

While Jumbla is a young studio - having been established in 2011 - we’ve grown quickly to garner a reputation for work of the highest quality. This has been recognised by awards from the Australian Video Producers Association, the AEAF Online Awards, Horizon Interactive Awards and the Muse Creative Awards. Perhaps one of our biggest accolades was being named an honouree at the Webby Awards - globally regarded as the “Oscars of the Internet”.

Josh, one of our youngest designers, says he never thought working at Jumbla would combine so well with his passion for video games. “Recently, I had the huge privilege of working on a video for Riot Games. They’re the makers of the most played online game in the world - League of Legends. The video, a “champion tease” for Ivern, ended up getting over 5 million views on Facebook and around 3 million views on YouTube. It was such a privilege to play a role in revealing this new character to the gaming community. No doubt I wouldn’t have had the fortune of working on something so widely viewed and shared… if it wasn’t for working at Jumbla.”

The Career

At Jumbla, we believe work should be meaningful. It should be an opportunity to express your passion, while learning new skills every day. That’s why employee development and training is as important to us as the quality of work we produce.

Jeric, one of our star animators today, began interning with Jumbla in 2015, fresh from graduating from Swinburne University (Bachelor of Digital Media Design).

After just a month of being mentored, he was recruited as a full-timer. Since then he’s completed projects for the agency Ogilvy, the video game Forza Motorsport and even an award-winning hand-drawn piece for Scottish Water in the UK.

The benefits of working at Jumbla aren’t just limited to the opportunities within our studio. Previous “Jumblers” have taken what they’ve learned within these walls, to further their own careers at other studios, agencies and brands. In fact, three of our previous junior employees have gone on to become Creative Directors at other places.

We’re also big on recognising and rewarding our talent, through regular prizes and accolades. We encourage our staff to advance their knowledge and push their creativity into new realms.

We’re pretty lucky to do what we do, but we believe in “paying it forward”. We want to empower the industry in Australia. That’s why we created Jumbla Academy - to foster new talent and give opportunities to people who are looking for an opportunity to elevate their skills to an industry standard.

The Studio Vibe

From the moment you walk in, you’ll know this isn’t your standard work space. Perhaps the sound is the first giveaway. We’ve got the trusted Spotify pumping out a carefully curated selection of tunes all day because, you know, printers, mouse clicks and keyboards sound pretty boring.

We all work in the same open space, enjoy lunching together and make regular use of the BBQ. Other notable features include our two outdoor courtyards, fishpond, dartboard and mini basketball hoop.

Then there’s the table tennis table and foosball set up. Standing as the proud centrepieces of the office, they get daily workouts. Whether for friendly hit-ups or intense battles, we consider them optimal devices to clear your mind before tackling a project.

If said battle ends in a tie, you can always settle the score with a Call of Duty showdown on our Playstation 4.

The Culture

Jumbla is more than a place of employment: it’s a place where creativity and passion bounce off the walls. It’s where the talent, diversity and potential of each person is recognised and fostered – and, importantly, it’s a place where we enjoy ourselves!

Social activities are always big on the agenda. Each month the team is shouted a fun and memorable group outing. Past activities have included a night at Luna Park, afternoons at the beach, wine and cheese nights, the Comedy Festival, an RnB club night… even lawn bowls!

One of the best things about working at Jumbla is banding together to tackle projects proudly and passionately with people you regard as friends – not just colleagues. Once a year, we take this enthusiasm outside the world of design and animation, with everyone designated one day purely to volunteering!

In small teams of four or five, animators will hang up their pen tablets for a day to support a charitable cause of their choosing. This can be anything from gardening or cooking at care facilities, to feeding animals at welfare shelters.

We believe in supporting each other and celebrating occasions where we’ve gone above and beyond for our clients. So, each month we award shout outs, with prizes such as gift vouchers and movie tickets (the winner of the annual shout out award last year took home an iPad!).

Animation is an industry that is constantly advancing and evolving. Key to our working culture is making sure the whole team is up to date on the very latest, so we can put the most innovative techniques to practice and really “wow” our clients. To make this happen, we hold monthly catch-ups and regular team workshops. These give us a chance to have a proper look at each other’s work, to learn what techniques were used during recent projects and how problems were solved. Jumbla appreciates that this is an industry in which one never stops learning.

It’s also an industry that each of us believes in. We have strong faith in animation and motion graphics as globally-advancing fields of design, and we also have strong faith in the quality of Australian creative talent. We want to bring more of it into our supportive studio environment so that we can create our strongest work, collectively.

All in all, working at Jumbla means contributing to quality top-tier projects, rapidly developing your technical abilities and hanging out with some awesome creatives!
